WARPED TOUR SPECIAL - YOUNG LONDON

Picture
Young London are from Boston. Done. That’s all I need.

No, I joke (not really), but Young London really are a great pop duo that I wanted to write about anyways. What luck that they are on Warped Tour, and I could tie in a little write up on them with our Warped Tour special we’re having!

The twosome (comprised of Matt Rhodes and Sarah Graziani) got together in 2010 and decided to make pop music. That was it! And ever since, they’ve been doing just that (and doing it fairly well I must say). Their self-titled debut (damn, I feel like I’ve written the words “self-titled debut” like eight times today. Is that just me?) came out only this past January, and I listened to it the other day in preparation for this post. Not for nothin’, it’s pretty poppy and gooooood.

The album is fronted by lead single “Let Me Go”, and it essentially continues from there. If at first the song sounds too familiar and you wanna tune out, just wait for Sarah to jump in and kill the chorus.

Next comes “Celebrity”, which features a rap vocal from rapper Rome Castille and whole lotta autotune (but done well and in a fun way, I promise). The song is about exactly what you think, but still fun. From what I’ve heard, Young London is prepping themselves for a major label deal, and I bet they can find someone to snatch them up pretty soon. They look the part, sound the part, and they’ve even gained a spot on Warped from their first record?

Going placessssss.

Anyways, here are the two singles off of ‘Young London’:
And now, look in on the little chat I had with Matt the other day:

1. As a fellow Bostonian, you already have a special place in my heart. Where in Boston did you meet? How did you decide to make (fantastic) pop music together?

We met in New Hampshire at a studio while i was recording a folk project for someone. Sarah came in to do guest vocals and i freaked out about her voice.
We started writing some demos shortly after and I really felt like we had something. This was all in 2011 so things went really fast.

Thanks for digging it :)

2.  So, "Young London"? Where's the name come from?

Sarah came up with it after we wrote most of our record. She was trying to come up with something classic and new sounding. Kind of like our writing style.

3. I see that Matt is more on the electronic production and Sarah is more on the writing. Do you two do your own thing and never the two shall change, or can you switch jobs sometimes?

I dont know if sarah will get much into production because the learning curve involved. Its still a joint effort in writing, but im sure our process will evolve and progress.

4. How does it feel playing Warped Tour? Do you feel like you fit in with your style of music?

I think that alternative and pop music aren't very different anymore. Although we feel like we stand out on Warped Tour, our fans and all time low fans aren't very different.

5. (I ask this of everyone) What are some artists or groups that you're listening to now that we should all go and check out?

Good question. Check out Porter Robinson and Knife Party for electronic. They are both incredible.

‘Young London’, the group’s LP, is available now, and you can find them on Facebook.

Warped Tour goes from June 16th til August 5th. Tickets are still available, and for a show that has dozens of bands and is going to rock your face off, it ain’t that pricey. Check it out!
