Warped Tour Special - Neo Geo

And as the summer rolls on, so does Warped Tour.
Today’s band is Neo Geo, a fivesome out of California (Fullerton actually, which always makes me sing the lyrics “somewhere down in Fullerton…” from Allister’s first record. I know that probably zero of you reading will know what that means, but in the off chance someone actually does, we are now kindred spirits).

The group is quite the mix of genres – they like to change it up almost song per song, from pop(ish) to electronica to rock, and then sometimes a song will give you all three. To be honest, a lot of their stuff sounds pretty dark, but believe me, I’m not saying that as a negative. I liked what I heard when I listened to Neo Geo, and I like that they aren’t afraid to do something different. They’ve got the industrial darkness look going on, but the music isn’t going to scare you off.
I also love anything female-fronted where you wouldn’t expect it. Since the massive rise of Evanescence years ago, how many chicks have stepped forward and decided they can rock the show and look hot doing it? Neo Geo (which means “new Earth” by the way) frontwoman Rainy Terrell won’t walk on stage without a pair of heels on, and you know that sells it for me. |
Ok, a little more rock than we’re used to on this blog, but I think it still fits. And besides, since when did stretching our interests kill us?
Well, Rainy from Neo Geo answered some questions for us while on the road, and here they are:
1. I listen to a song like "Can't Catch Me" and I think I know what Neo Geo sounds like, and then I listen to "THS" and I'm thrown. What are you guys?
Having an album with different types of songs that convey different types of emotions, creates a larger dynamic for the listener to relate to. A good record has a little bit of something for everyone. I don't like putting a label on our style music; I think blurring the lines of genres a bit, makes all different types of people attracted to our sound.
2. I read that you're working with Cameron Webb for your debut full length. What is that going to sound like? I can imagine that going in so many directions!
We worked with Cameron for our debut record which came out last June 21, 2011. It was an amazing experience, he pushed us to make everything the best it could possibly be. Never telling us what to write, it challenged myself and the band to never settle on anything. We're excited to start working on our second record within the next couple months though!
3. Who do you guys get compared to musically? I have ideas, but I want to see if I'm in the majority or if I'm making this up.
We get compared to alot of bands; Evanescence, No Doubt, Paramore, Garbage. All are very flattering, but you can't seem to put your finger quite on it. Which makes what were doing validated because we're creating our own sound and style.
4. What is this, your third Warped Tour in a row? Second? How does it feel to keep getting asked back?
This is our third year in a row, and it has been a great experience! With so much fan support and with every new state, the excitement is ever increasing. We really want to thank Kevin for such a great opportunity! It truly has been a great year.
5. (I ask this of everyone) What are some artists or groups that you're listening to now that we should all go and check out?
I like listening to a lot of Classical Music. I would recommend Chopin or Debussy. They are my favorites.
Chopin? Did not see that one coming. Anyways, Neo Geo is on Facebook, and I’m sure they would want me to tell you that they would want you to want them (well, I’m sure they’d rather you “like” them, but that doesn’t sound as good).
Warped Tour goes from June 16th til August 5th. Tickets are still available, and for a show that has dozens of bands and is going to rock your face off, it ain’t that pricey. Check it out!
