Review - Will.I.Am - Willpower
I wanted to write either a purely negative or a completely (and surprisingly) positive overview of Will.I.Am’s latest album, but I have to be honest and look at every part of this not-too-difficult-to-solve puzzle.
Also, I am not going to refer to the album as ‘#willpower’, because I think that is stupid. From henceforth it will just go by ‘willpower’. Sorry not sorry.
Will.I.Am has never been at his best when solo, and this album follows the same path as 2007’s ‘Songs About Girls’ (remember “I Got It From My Mama”?!?!). Surely this is already a greater commercial success, but I just don’t hear that x factor that his Black Eyed Peas work has that makes it so unforgettable. Is it possible that Fergie is ACTUALLY responsible for making something good?
‘willpower’ is an album like any other from a superstar producer; think David Guetta or Calvin Harris’ last CDs. You were hard-pressed to find a single track that didn’t have a name attached to it glowing with neon. Will enlists a celebrity crowd as well, but instead of letting them have the song with his production, he insists on being involved in one capacity or another, thus bringing the whole thing down.
Not all is lost though – this is sure to please more than a few people who can cast aside good taste and just feel the music. “Scream and Shout (ft. Britney Spears)” is undeniably catchy, and you can just FORGET IT when that shit comes on in a club. “This Is Love (ft. Eva Simons)” went to #1 in the UK and was a massive smash. Even the Justin Bieber-assisted “That Power” (again, I’m not saying “hashtag” anything) has wormed its way into my skull.
There is plenty to enjoy here is you don’t really think about it. Will’s lyrics have never been less clever or used more common turns of phrases, but we may be numb to the pain by now. Sometimes it’s best to just focus on the good: Fergie’s face is nowhere to be seen.
Listen to: “This Is Love (ft. Eva Simons)”, “Scream and Shout (ft. Britney Spears)”, “That Power (ft. Justin Bieber)”, “Far Away From Home (ft. Nicole Scherzinger)”, “Fall Down (ft. Miley Cyrus)”
