Review - Sky Ferreira - Night Time, My Time

Sky Ferreira is an artist whose name has been out there for an inordinate amount of time when you look at her actual musical output. She’s been buzzing on the blogosphere for years now, but this is her first proper LP (long time coming, eh?). Part of the reason it has taken our Sky so long to finalize an album is that she changed sounds, going from more bubblegum/typical pop to what we hear on ‘Night Time My Time’.

Her sound evolved into a dark, fuzzy electro noise sort of thing. Think gothy 80’s groups or more contemporary acts like Chvrches or Charli XCX. Gone is a pretty blonde girl we all want big hits from, and in her place we have this Sky--the one who smiles as much as one of the Olsen twins and who chooses a nude photo of herself in the shower looking terrified for her album cover. Very Fiona Apple.

The album itself is rather good, but don’t come here looking for any big hits. Sky on-trend with her new style, though she isn’t the leader of the pack. I listened to the entire set waiting for a big sound, but everything is on the mellow, at least compared to what we’re used to with “pop” (not sure we can even call it that). Even lead single “You're Not The One” leaves you wanting more, but not for seconds, just a better version of the first.

Listen to: “You're Not The One”, “24 Hours”
