Review - Sara Bareilles - Once Upon Another Time EP

Sara Bareilles is honestly one of my all-time favorite singers. Her debut ‘Little Voice’ is in my top 10 favorite albums, and her follow up ‘Kaleidoscope Heart’ was amazing as well. She is a perfect example of why you shouldn’t always trust your radio and the charts to tell you what to listen to; in all of her amazingness (she doesn’t have a bad song yet), she has only managed to chart two songs on the Hot 100 in all of her career. Sadly, this EP won’t do anything to change that number, as I don’t think her label is even releasing any of the songs as singles.

Don’t let all that bother you though – ‘Once Upon Another Time’ is essentially perfect, and I’m not just saying that because I love her. Songs like “Bright Lights and Cityscapes” are the best of what we expect from her, while tracks like “Once Upon Another Time” keep her trademark heart-wrenching beauty, but prove that she is a multi-faceted artist and that she can bring us to our knees in so many ways.

Every song is unique and completely different from the rest. Producer Ben Folds’ (yes, that Ben Folds) presence is there for sure, but the album is still undeniably Sara. This CD shows a lot of growth on her part (except for “Sweet As Whole”, which is Sara’s clever way of saying “Asshole”), and has her reaching into new musical territory. I am thinking that the five songs on here are a preview of what her new album may look like (which I can only hope may be out sometime next year?), and if that is the case, I am going to snap that shit up and love every second of it (like I wasn’t going to already).

Listen to: Every song. If I had to pick a least favorite, it would be “Sweet As Whole”, and if I had to pick a favorite, I may have to go with “Once Upon Another Time”, but that was really hard to say.
