Review - Feist – Metals

Feist’s “The Reminder” might have been one of the biggest breakthroughs of the past decade or so. No, it was not her first album, but it was the work that introduced so many millions of people to this strange, new girl whose iPod commercial tune “1, 2, 3, 4” was completely inescapable (not that you would want to have gotten away if you could).

After four years of tours and awards, Ms. Leslie Feist is back with her third proper album, “Metals”. “Metals” shows her doing what she does best – pushing genres to their break and forcing them to meld together. Feist has been described as everything from indie to folk to pop to Americana (ironic, as she is Canadian). While all of these truly work, this new album shows Feist deliberately stepping away from the ‘pop’ term, while still making a perfectly Feist album.

“Metals”, while lacking anything close to a large radio single, is full of punctuated and understated beauty. The entire album sounds like a mountain valley-scape at sunrise – quiet, but vast. Feist seems to be almost whispering throughout the record, but it sounds as if she is whispering right to you.

Listen to: "The Bad In Each Other", "Comfort Me", and "How Come You Never Go There"
