Listen Up - Youngblood Hawke
I just got an email from a publicist asking me to check out the new group her label is representing. I don’t always listen to the bands in these emails, but this time around I thought “hey, why not?”. This woman seems to represent only the most awesome, so I gave them a go.
Their name is Youngblood Hawke, and they are straight out of LA. It seems that the two founding members – Sam and Simon. The two had been in another group (unnamed), but things went sour and they went out on their own. Three friends joined them, and now all of a sudden they are making musical magic. Youngblood Hawke (their name apparently comes from a Herman Wouk novel) are in this new wave of alternative not-quite-rock, more pop bands that have sprung up everywhere all of a sudden. Think in the vein of Foster The People or Grouplove. The music is different, original, new, and it immediately catches your ear and hooks you in. Their new single “We Come Running” is going to be the one that breaks them – if only at an underground level. It’s a great pop tune, and here it is: And if you liked that, please, please listen to some of their other tracks. I love that they do something with the vocals – what, I can’t tell – but I think it separates them from the crowd. They have these wonderful harmonizing background vocals in all of their songs – sometimes clear, other times clearly done with the help of studio tools. Different every time, they play with distances and pitches and tones; this is their thing, and I love it. Youngblood Hawke are fairly new to the scene (as is my understanding), and I would love to see them take off (as they probably will). There is such a market for this sort of thing right now, they just need to get out there and rock this shit outtt. Check them out on Facebook too! |
