Listen Up - TNGHT
![]() I don’t even really know what to call this music. Is it hip-hop without the words? Is it dance? Electronica? Something…else? It doesn’t really matter. It’s great.
TNGHT is the name of the duo, and they are making themselves known. Well known. The pair consists of two already well-known producers – Hudson Mohawke and Lunice – both of whom have been in this whole “music thing” for a while now. The two have come together to create some sonic experiments that have truly never been done before. The whole thing is very Major Lazer, and I mean that in the best way possible. Diplo comes together with…whomever he happens to be working with at the moment…and they take sounds and odds and ends and they produce it into something incredible. Sometimes you can hear the bits and pieces, but somehow the whole is still greater than the sum of its parts. TNGHT have been playing out recently, and if the crowd’s reaction is anything to take note of (it might be), they are going to EXPLODE. Right now they are still just cool to the indie/hipster kids, but soon enough, you’ll be seeing them touring on a larger scale, and possibly producing for some big names. The duo released an EP earlier this year, and right now that is their only recording. Take a listen to it and you’ll see what I mean. Can’t you hear some sick new school hip-hop on this? I wonder if someone has taken advantage of that yet. Maybe I’ll be the first (ok, now to learn how to rap). TNGHT are part of a growing movement that is creating music that isn’t…shall we say…nice. The beat isn’t friendly, nor are the plethora of sounds strewn about (seemingly) carelessly. Like much of electro and dubstep, the music is at times offensive, even scary. The fact that a song can make you feel uncomfortable, while still making you want to dance is exciting. Kind of like going to a horror movie, even though you know it is going to scare the bejeezus out of you. So that is what TNIGHT has to offer…for now. Keep your eyes open to go and see them live, and you better believe they will have new tunes out soon. This whole style is on the rise my friends. Ya heard it here first.
