Listen Up! - Lo-Fang
If nothing else, Matthew Hemerlein is somewhat of a hero to me and so many others. How could he not be after doing what so many of us wish we could: quit his day job and travel the world and then making an album of his experiences? The result of all this wanderlust was a mixtape that was so brilliant, EMI wanted to sign him FAST. Everything about his work is shockingly sparse, beautiful, and refreshing. Where we’re used to big dance beats, Lo-Fang gives us Bon Iver-style editing and multi-instrumental recordings, where he is responsible for every sound you hear. Matthew can evoke more emotion in one syllable or a singular pluck from his banjo than many can in an entire LP. This isn’t pop as I’m used to, but a new way of thinking about the genre. A bit of The Weeknd R&B, a tad James Blake-y vocals going on, and his own signature magic make Lo-Fang a really special and captivating artist. |
