Listen Up! - Jillette Johnson

Every once in a while I come across something that I love so much, I actually get annoyed that I wasn’t paying enough attention so as to catch it earlier. Why did I listen to that stupid indie band I know I don’t like instead of (insert name here)? Ugh. Stupid me!

Jillette Johnson is the latest artist to do this to me. I can’t be mad at her--she was busy putting out an amazing album and touring the country, playing for the thousands of people much better informed than I. She simply didn’t have time to reach out and say “HUGH! You’ll like me! Listen!”. I forgive easily.

Johnson is everything I love in music, and a rare find for me. As you may know, I’m the BIGGEST Sara Bareilles fan, and I’m always on the lookout for someone in that vein to excite me. Play me a girl who can sing, write songs, and play piano and there’s a pretty good chance I’ll instantly be tuning in for life.

The New York-based singer-songwriter could stand right next to Sara and hold her own, pop hook for pop hook, high note for high note. Her album ‘Water In A Whale’ would have been on my “Favorite of 2013” list, had I known about it. I first heard Jillette at an intimate show at eyewear brand Moscot’s boutique, and it was love at first hear.

She looks punk rock, tickles the ivory like a pro, and her voice is a mix of Rufus Wainwright and she hits and holds notes like Matthew Bellamy. I’m not kidding around you guys--even if she doesn’t break the mainstream, I’m absolutely in love.
