Grammys 2014 - Shortlist - Song of the Year

Song of the Year is often very close to Record of the Year. After all, since ROTY picks the best songs overall, the majority of them must be well written, write? (Yes, I know that is wrong. It’s a joke.)
While they are often similar, they are almost never exactly the same. There are usually at least a few tracks that are included in one that don’t make it into the other. Think of songs that weren’t big hits but are beautifully written and you’ve got yourself some Song of the Year nominees.

Unlike ROTY, SOTY is only five slots, so this gets a bit tighter. JT and Adele stick around, but I moved “Same Love” up into my actual noms, as the words are just so astoundingly powerful. For this category, I bet Bruno Mars would switch #1’s and go with the more somber piano ballad. Kacey Musgraves is a big up-and-comer in the songwriting world, and Sara Bareilles is also a favorite of the voters.
