Grammys 2013 - Shortlist - Record of the Year

Picture
Now that we have Best New Artist out of the way, let’s go to Record of the Year. I don’t know why no one starts with Album of the Year in their Grammy predictions (critics and magazines, etc), but I’m just following their lead.

Maybe they are saving it til the end, to make you keep reading? Sure, that’s it. I’m doing that too.

So, here is my shortlist:

Record of the Year
Adele – “Rumor Has It”
Black Keys – “Lonely Boy”
Carly Rae Jepsen – “Call Me Maybe”
Drake – “Take Care (ft. Rihanna)”
Frank Ocean – “Thinkin Bout You”
Florence + the Machine – “Shake It Out”
fun. – “We Are Young (ft. Janelle Monae)”
Gotye – “Somebody That I Used To Know (ft. Kimbra)”
Katy Perry – “Wide Awake”
Kelly Clarkson – “Stronger”

Carly Rae Jepsen and fun. and Gotye are obviously on here, but what else? I have a good idea that Drake will get a slot, and I hope beyond hope that Florence + the Machine does as well. The single didn’t perform well, but Adele showed us last year that a crazy British female vocal and something so deep it cuts you on the inside can wow Grammy voters. I think “Shake It Out” was an unbelievable song, and I would really LOVE to see it granted a slot here.

The rest are possibilities, but I don’t feel as strongly about them. I noticed afterwards that there’s no country on here, but I don’t know what I would put. I have a thought or two, but they don’t seem to match up to the surprise pop that dominated airwaves and sales this year.

A few other songs were tossed around in my brainstorming, but I kicked them out without thinking too hard:
Bruno Mars – “It Will Rain”
Jason Mraz – “I Won’t Give Up”
Taylor Swift & The Civil Wars – “Safe & Sound”

Am I right? Well, we’ll find out on December 5th, won’t we?
