Get To Know - Ellie Goulding

Picture
I have written about Ms. Ellie Goulding before (a few times, actually. In fact, Ellie is the only person who has made it on to my Favorite Albums Of... list twice [in two separate years] with THE SAME ALBUM [first with the UK version of her CD, then the US version]), but never in a lot of detail. Seeing as she is finally becoming somewhat successful in the US with her single “Lights” (which actually was released over a year ago and was only sent to US radio this past January). Ellie has proven herself a massive and unique pop success, so I am glad that her record label (one of which is Cherrytree Records, who are known for finding and fostering pop acts that are really out there) is giving her the promotion she needs in this country.

Ellie has only released one album, ‘Lights’, which came out all the way back in February of 2010. She rereleased the album as ‘Bright Lights’ (many artists will rerelease an album with a few new songs), and found even more success with it. The CD was released in the US more than a year after it was out in her home country (the UK of course), and it hit a modest #76. I’ll be interested to see if her single doing well makes the album sell better, and thus shows she has a real future in the US market.

From that one album (and the reissue), Ellie (who is now only 25) released six singles, the lowest of which was her first, which didn’t quite crack the top 50. And, while she hasn’t made it to #1 on the singles chart yet, three of those six singles did make it into the top 20, and that’s not nothing.

I’m writing about Ellie because I want to get on this bandwagon before she becomes too famous in the US and I can’t really write this segment about her. But, really though, I have loved Ellie’s music for a long time, and I want to make sure you hear a lot of it and not just the one song that has managed to make it over here. She isn’t just another little girl singing pop – she is taking it in a really interesting direction, and I can’t wait to see what her next album (already well into production) will sound like.

Here are the six singles from ‘Lights’, starting with the title track, which is coming to a US radio near you (if it isn’t already):

And now we’ll go back in the chronological order that her singles came out in. “Lights” might not even be my favorite single of hers, but it is the one that really spurred me to write this piece, so I felt it deserved to be put up front.

This may very well be my favorite Ellie song. Goddamn its good.

Ellie’s cover of the famous Elton John song saw her all the way up to #2, her highest charting song.

And those are Ellie’s six singles thus far. See what I mean when I say she’s pretty original and awesome? She’s been busy working on album number two, which should be out within a year (hopefully), and boy is that going to be one of the best pop albums of that year.

Ellie is online if you want to buy some of her songs and albums and stuff.

Because we’re in the US, you can’t really get the full version of ‘Bright Lights’, but don’t worry, the US version of ‘Lights’ has all the best of the UK version of ‘Lights’ and ‘Bright Lights’. You can buy it here.
