9.22.12 - New Music - Kimbra
Kimbra (the featured vocal on Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know”) put out her own debut US album this past summer, the lovely ‘Vows’.
While much of that album featured the songs that were on the Australian version of the CD of the same name (which came out many months before), the US version did have some new tracks. One of these songs was “Come Into My Head”, which was certainly one of the standouts. “Come Into My Head” is too cool for words, and that is something we didn’t necessarily expect from Kimbra. K, the girl who is quiet-spoken on “Somebody” and weirdly indie-pop on much of ‘Vows’ shakes things up with a funk/soul/groove beat and yelps and screams, singing about someone in her head. The video mimics this frenzy and insanity, taking things to a literal place. The film is shot in a mental hospital, and this is where Kimbra brings it back to where we know her – the oddball who looks too much like Regina Spektor for anyone’s comfort. The song has not yet been announced as a single of any kind, but there is a video for it, and the song and clip are getting some attention. While “Settle Down” didn’t do a whole lot for her here, why not this track? I say they push and push and push until she becomes a self-actualized singer herself. If nothing else, what a great way to highlight a fantastic song. |
