9.20.12 - New Music - Sam and the Womp

Every year the world accepts one or two songs that make no logical sense, but we love them anyways. When I say this, I am not talking about Nicki Minaj’s promotional singles (ouch, burn), but rather those tunes that make you dance and you can’t explain why. Usually you don’t even know what the person in them is saying, but they catch you and stick in your brain for months or years at a time anyways. Think Chumbawumba’s “Tubthumper”, Yolanda Be Cool’s “We No Speak Americano”, or Duck Sauce’s “Barbra Streisand”. You know, songs that are stupid but catchy as hell. The more I describe these, the more I realize it basically is Nicki Minaj.

Well, this year it is a British dance/instrumental group named Sam and the Womp. “Womp” is a dance term for…well…womp. These things are hard to describe. “Womp” is seen a lot in drum and bass and dubstep. It is one of the many sounds we hear that make up the composition of these genres. How do I describe the sounds that make up dubstep? Ugh.

Anyways, their first single recently went to #1 in the UK, and it is quite the song. “Bom Bom” will certainly make you dance, but you’ll hate yourself for it…kind of.

See what I mean? But you can totally hear this thing going worldwide, right?

Thankfully (?), “Bom Bom” has now been released to the US, so good luck to us all.
