8.8.12 - New Music - Karmin
Karmin is one of my breakout stars of the year, no doubt about that. After writing about their song “Brokenhearted” about a million times, it seems they are ready to move on with their singles…even if I’m not (that song still kills me every time!).
I think “Hello” is a good choice for second single. “Brokenhearted” gave us a tasting of Amy’s hip-hop skills, and “Hello” brings them out for all to see. The song is a lovely synth-fronted pop/electro track that she raps over, which is something we don’t see very often. Points for originality. Something about it isn’t quite perfect though. Don’t get me wrong, the song is good (I wasn’t thrilled by it before, but listening to it again I do like it), but maybe it’s that chorus. A little more catchy – a different hook perhaps? Well, anyways, “Hello” is still doing better than a lot of what I’ve heard this year, and I’m still going to give it a thumbs up. BONUS – I’m from Boston (if you didn’t know that already), so any time someone is from Boston (such as Karmin), I’m pretty much sold from the beginning. Not only are they starting off on the right foot, but Amy actually mentions some Boston landmarks: “Mass Ave. street, jammed up to Newbury” You all might not know what this means, but it made my day. |
