8.7.12 - New Music - The Veronicas

The Veronicas (OH MY GOD REMEMBER THE VERONICAS!!?!) are back with the lead single from their upcoming third album ‘Life On Mars’. The minute the single started, I was worried. The first few seconds sound too much like a sped-up “Lights” by Ellie Goudling. In fact, I bet that is exactly what that is.

The two sound so similar (being that they are the same I can understand that) that I went through and checked out who the producers were. If it was the same guy, I was going to call shenanigans and go ape shit on his ass (in a review of course). Such is not the case. “Lolita” was produced by Toby Gad, who has worked with just about everyone ever. I am still unsure how I feel about that sampling…

Now, listen to the first few seconds again, and now listen to Ellie:

See what I mean? I wonder if the girls are even aware of this. Well, I’ve made my point. Let’s move along.

“Lolita” is a good way for the girls to come back. ‘Life On Mars’ is their first album in five years, and it is about time. I am not a fan of groups taking that much time off unless you are U2 or Madonna or something. If you make your fans wait that long for a new single, you better make sure it is spectacular.

I don’t feel that “Lolita” is this spectacular I speak of, but I also don’t hate it. The single is catchy enough, and I feel that while it sounds different from some of their previous tracks (“Untouched”, if you remember back that far”), it still feels like them. Yes, it may have the electro breakdown after the chorus (serving as the chorus) and the dubstep break towards the end (all the makings of a current song), but the personality of the two girls shines through.

Unfortunately, “Lolita” is not available in the US, and don’t expect it any time soon. The album is slated for a September/October release over in Australia (where they are from, and where the song has so far peaked at #29), but they have never been a name in the US.
