8.14.12 - New Music - George Michael
Uh oh. I need some bold up in here.
George Michael is back! The single is off some new collection or album or who knows what coming soon. I don’t think there are many details on what it is going to be on, but a new single is a new single, and we’ll take what we can get from any legend. The song is about Michael's near-death experience last year. He was on tour in Europe and he came down with pneumonia, and he became very, very ill. Apparently it was close to the end, but he pulled it together and (obviously) made it. PHEW! “White Light” sounds like what it is – the later recordings of a former star. George Michael is nothing like he used to be, and “White Light” isn’t nearly as good as some of the more famous Wham! singles, nor some of his own. We all expected this, and we were ready for a lot worse. I like that “White Light” is somewhat current – the music certainly isn’t 2012, but it also isn’t him trying to reach back into 1985 and get some of his former fame and glory back. The song is fairly well written, and he pulls it off with a letter B grade (maybe a B-, but I’m nice). The song was premiered earlier this summer, and he even opened the Olympics with this and a more famous tune, “Freedom”. The song only recently became available for purchase though, so that is my justification for it’s going under the “new music” moniker. And there we go. |
