8.12.13 - New Music - Lady Gaga

If Gaga had another week to wait, this might have been a number one, but now that she is competing with Katy Perry…?

“Applause” is a tale of two Gaga’s, though that isn’t to say that no matter who you are you’ll like something here.

First, we have the ever more insufferable Gaga—one who will do almost anything to be artistic, even at the expense of good taste. Her Bowie references are everywhere (even the cover), and while that’s swell, what is up with that accent? Her singing style on the verses is the biggest drawback for the lead ‘ArtPop’ single.

Then the chorus hits, and all is forgotten. All of a sudden the original Lady Gaga returns. “Applause” isn’t about God, Jesus, loving yourself even if you’re gay…it is focused solely on having fun and making you dance. Remember those days?

After the all-too-heavy (but still great) ‘Born The Way’, the girl (almost) shows us she knows how to just have fun.
