7.19.12 - New Music - Whitney Houston and Jordin Sparks

Before she died, the late Whitney Houston finished one last project: her movie ‘Sparkle’ and its accompanying soundtrack. The movie isn’t out yet, but the music is, and I think we should listen.

The song is a testament to Whitney’s legacy, and shows her passing the torch. The movie and album were a way of bringing Jordin up to a real singer’s status, and Whitney seemed all too happy to do so while she was alive. Jordin Sparks may not be Whitney, but she is a talented woman, and who knows where her career will head from here.

“Celebrate” forces you to do just that; the song is uptempo, danceable, and just all around happy. Even though you can’t help but think of Ms. Houston’s untimely passing, how appropriate is it that her last recording is one of pure joy. “Celebrate” isn’t sad, it isn’t mournful, it does for us what so many of Whitney’s songs did – make us move! The video is simple and features a lot more Jordin than Whitney (for obvious reasons).

I didn’t know much about the movie before this, but after watching the video (and listening to the song), I might actually head out and buy a ticket when this comes out.
