6.28.12 - New Music - Nicki Minaj
Nicki Minaj is bouncing back and forth between hip hop and dance so much I can barely keep track. Funny, neither can her fans.
The fourth official single off ‘Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded” (goddammit I hate that title) is “Pound The Alarm”, which will be released in July alongside an urban single “Champion”, which features Drake, Nas, and Young Jeezy. I won’t play that one for you, I just wanted you to see that Nicki is going the route of her contemporaries like Chris Brown, Rihanna, and sometimes Beyonce – release one single for urban/hip hop/R&B markets while promoting another than is more pop/dance. Cover all angles and (theoretically) your album will sell. (I don’t think that is the official cover for the single, seeing as she is wearing the exact same outfit on the “Starships” cover, but we’ll see. Maybe they’re trying to make it a thing) “Pound The Alarm” is another RedOne doing, and it isn’t hard to tell. The song is essentially “Starships (pt. II)” in that they are the same song. If you thought “Starships” was Nicki trying to recreate the success of “Super Bass” (which it was), then you won’t believe “Pound The Alarm”. I like the song…for what it is. I don’t listen to Nicki Minaj’s lyrics anymore (she used to be well known for being really clever. Now she just…well…you know… “And if you a G you a G G G”), I just jam along. “PTA” is dancey enough, and it has another awesome breakdown, courtesy of RedOne. Hey, RedOne, save some of those. I would love Gaga’s next record to have a stop-you-in-your-tracks breakdown somewhere. “Pound The Alarm” is available now, but not as a single. You can buy it off of the album, or you can wait until it is officially released as a stand-alone single. Do whateva makes ya happy. |
