5 Questions With - Krewella

Picture
You wanna talk about dance becoming part of the mainstream? Look at Krewella. The trio has been popular on the dance circuit for years, but only in the past few months have they made a surge for something greater. Their single “Alive” is working its way up the Hot 100, and for something so EDM-intensive, that’s impressive.
The trio sat down and answered a few of Pop! Bang! Boom!’s questions – and while they were busy promoting the single, touring and recording. That’s just swell of them.

1. Your song “Alive” is at #51 on the Hot 100 list and climbing (by the time this interview was completed, the song had thus far peaked at #45 [and going!]). What’s your reaction to its immediate reception?

Couldn't be more excited this is happening, when not even a year ago we would never have imagined this. We wrote the song over a year ago and released it ten months ago. When we first released our EP, our core fans naturally grativated towards Alive, and from there it kept growing. Sirius XM started playing it and it when #1 on the Dance Charts. From there it crossed over to the Hot 100. I remember the day it entered at #99. I think we were all in shock, and now it's at #45 (just found out yesterday!)

2. You have already released the ‘Play Hard’ EP – can we expect more of that sound, or are you now shifting in a poppier, more mainstream dance sound?

If anything, we're going harder than ever before because we're experimenting with new sounds and tapping into Rain Man's metal roots and the girls' influence and love of rock song writing. Expect an intense, emotional, and evocative album.

3. Were there any artists in particular that influenced how you produced your music? Any hints from artists that might not particularly be dance or electronic?

Even when we started making music together back in 2007, we were influenced and inspired by electronic acts such as Chromeo, The Faint, MSTRKRFT, Justice, and Daft Punk. Currently we look up to leaders in the genre such as Knife Party (and related, Pendulum), DJ Fresh, and Nicky Romero because they have top of the line sounds and vision to think ahead of the curve. Artists that aren't dance or electronic that we've always pulled inspiration from are System of a Down, Sum 41, Fall Out Boy, Drake, Linkin Park, The Cure, Incubus, Suicide Silence, & Killswitch Engage. We are deeply rooted in our metal and rock roots.

4. We love the name. Where did it come from?

5. (We ask everyone this) Who are some artists or groups that you are listening to now that we should all go out and try? Ones we might not know...?

Netsky, Flume, Loadstar, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Pegboard Nerds, Bro Safari, Active Child, Noisecontrollers, & The Chaotic Good. Some of these guys are our very talented homies, some are just mind-blowing musicians. Check them out.
“Alive” is available now, and it is on the ‘Play Hard’ EP (also available, and supremely wonderful).
