5 Questions With - Ed Sheeran

Picture
Ed Sheeran is like, kind of a big deal you guys. No, not kind of, REALLY. In addition to having a massive number one album in the UK (which spawned four top ten hits and won him some Brit Awards), the album peaked at number five in the US. For someone who at that time didn’t have a hit single here (and lead single and only US-released song “The A Team” has yet to crack the top 40), that’s a big deal. See! I told you!

(Oh, and by the way – he’s featured on some girl named Taylor Swift’s new album, but don’t expect that to do a whole lot)

Luckily, Ed is a super nice guy, and he answered a few of our questions

1. The US is experiencing a whole new British Invasion right now - Adele, The Wanted, One Direction, Ellie Goulding, and now you. Do you think this is a fad, or are we (Americans) finally getting it?

I don’t think the invasion ever stopped to be honest. Both of our countries have been swapping music and acts for years. I think the only difference now is there is so much opportunity for acts to break internationally through the internet- YouTube is a very powerful tool.

2. Your album has been out for a while now (at least in the UK) - working on any new material?

Of course, it’s healthy to never stop writing. I find it hard not to keep releasing stuff, but I have to be patient with the album I have out at the moment. The album is only just getting released in certain territories and I need to tour it for quite a while, but there are a lot of new songs in the bag!

3. '+' was SO successful! Do you feel any pressure to top yourself?

I think as long as I’m 100% happy with the music I am producing and putting out there then there is no pressure. If my next album sells 12 copies worldwide but I think it’s the best collection of songs I could have produced at that time then that’s the main thing in my opinion. I would hate to tour an album I wasn’t happy with for two years. I’m in this job because I enjoy it.

4. Pop music is essentially code word for electronic or dance music these days. How does it feel to bring it back down to an acoustic guitar and you, and have such a response to it?

I was quite surprised at how people took to the songs. I became this type of 'teen star' off the back of a song I wrote when I was 18 about a homeless woman I met, so getting my head around that was interesting. I just love that people are enjoying the music I put out there.

5. (I ask this of everyone) What are some music acts you love that we should all go out and listen to?

Foy Vance, Passenger and Ben Howard, and all great male singer songwriters.

Wow. Having Ed Sheeran speak with my blog means a lot to me. Really.

I think in celebration we should all go out and buy his album ‘+’ (yes, that’s what it’s called).

Thanks so much Ed, and we can’t wait to write up anything and everything you do next.
