5 QUESTIONS WITH - AYAH MARAR

Self-proclaimed "proper mongrel" Ayah Marar has splashed into the pop music scene with a hell of a lot more to offer than just catchy lyrics. Her fusion of genres with the chrorus-friendly aspects of modern pop have made a profound impression with her debut album The Real. Her prior collaboration with Calvin Harris "Thinking About You" proved her ability to cater to the ever-evolving pop scene and her current single "Beg Borrow Steal" shows her true solo artist abilities.

The Real speaks for itself, as does Ayah when we spoke with her.

1. Listening to your album, I got a sense of multiple different genres. Was that your original take on your sound or did you start with one in mind? What would you describe your genre as?
I'm not sure I would classify sub-genres of dance music as anything other than just that, if I'm honest.  I've always been an underground dance music artist, and this is a musical, sensationalised autobiography.  A journalist once called it Epic Doom Pop, I like that!

2. Your new single "Beg Borrow Steal" is a very different style of song than, say, "The Raver." Is this a ballad of universal meaning or was it based off of a personal experience?
All the tracks come from personal experience and BBS is mostly about being a big enough person to admit you can't handle a situation, even though it's all love.

3. You teamed up with Calvin Harris for "Thinking About You." How was the change from solo artist to dance collaborator for you? Any new ones in the mix?
I've known Calvin a very long time, so that was mostly a fun reunion that turned into a big record.  I started out my career as a collaborator so it was really the album that was my first step out on my own, or rather with a bunch of severely talented young men.

4. What are your plans for your future in music? Solo artist or producer for your label? Maybe both?
I really want to develop the label more, discover new talent and pay back my dues to music.  I'm really excited to be involved in the music scene as more than simply an artist and I think it's important we all know what we can do and how we can do it to keep the underground movement strong.

5. Who are some artists or groups you are listening to that our readers might not know, but should definitely check out?
The Dubratz, Kutz, Russo, John Smith, JOB, David Dann & Steve Zhu, Youngman, Alix Perez, DRS ... The list goes on and on!  All super talented humans!
