4.7.13 - New Music - Selena Gomez

There has been quite a bit of buildup for Selena Gomez’s new single (and her first since deciding to ditch her “band” The Scene), and for a while I thought it was all hype, and that there would be nothing to back it up. After a few listens, I can safely say that it is only about 50% hype.

“Come and Get It” is a good start for Selena – she is growing up, she is becoming an artist in her own right, and she wants to do something different. The track is a departure from her happy-go-lucky Disney Radio pop days, but it isn’t so far as to lose her fanbase. I don’t really understand the wide appeal of Ms. Gomez, but I will admit that she has one, and that they will follow her through this new sound.

The ethnic sounds are unexpected, but the dubstep-centric beat is not. StarGate took an extra few moments to make this something different, so don’t be afraid of that dreaded “d” word. While Selena’s vocals are nothing to praise, the effects piled onto them are. She doesn’t sound human, and we don’t mind that one bit.
