4.29.12 - New Music - Nelly Furtado
Nelly Furtado’s career was all but over until Timbaland stepped in and helped her create the pop masterpiece that was ‘Loose’, and album that would go on to sell over 10 million copies around the world and that featured that smash hits “Promiscuous (ft. Timbaland)”, “Maneater”, and “Say It Right”. Since then (the album came out all the way back in 2006!), she has released a Latin album which did well in the US, but putting out a Spanish-language CD is no way to keep your name in the spotlight. We need new music that everyone can enjoy!
Nelly’s fifth album (and fourth English album) is due out in June, and we have heard a lot about it. First we heard that it would take her back to her “I’m Like A Bird” days, and then we heard she was experimenting with other styles. It seems she is pulling a Madonna on this one (where she says something she wants to do, it doesn’t work and things are coming down to the wire, so she puts out what she can get together). The first single off the new album, called “Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)” is…interesting. After listening to the song a few times through, I still don’t think it is actually about anything. First it’s about earrings, then it’s about lyrics. Then it is Nelly thinking the song is over, talking about how it actually is not over, and then we’re back to the hoops. Ummm, ok. “Big Hoops” leaves a LOT to be desired. I can see that she is really trying for something that will get her back on the charts, but this isn’t it. Furtado knows what it is like to have success and see it disappear, only to be given a second chance. If the rest of the album is anything like this, Nelly better start praying for a third chance. |
