3.20.12 - New Music - Katy Perry
Katy Perry is the latest in a series of artists who are re-releasing their albums with EPs full of new music (think Lady Gaga re-releasing 'The Fame' with 'The Fame Monster' or Jessie J re-releasing 'Who You Are' as a platinum edition with the hit "Domino". This is a good idea because it lets the artist get new music out there in a shorter amount of time than an entire album takes (it can be years between albums sometimes). It isn’t good for people to disappear for too long – especially in the pop music world.
In Katy’s case, it can also help bring sales up on a previously-released album. Her ‘Teenage Dream’ may have had a record-meeting 5 #1 singles, but sales of the album weren’t up to par with something that was so popular. Many people will buy another copy – or their first copy – in order to get this new EP. ‘Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection’ (what a fun title) will have all of the original songs, along with three remixes (the Kanye West-assisted “E.T.”, the version of “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” with Missy Elliott, and the acoustic recording of “The One That Got Away”), a megamix of all the singles from the album, and three new songs. We have all already heard the first single, “Part of Me”, which debuted at #1, and now Katy has released a new song from this collection. I really wasn’t in love with “Part of Me”, but I am certainly a fan of “Wide Awake”. I wish she hadn’t released it, and instead she had waited and put this out as a single. It might have done fairly well, actually. If you are interested, “Part of Me”, “Wide Awake”, the third unreleased song “Dressin Up”, and everything else will be on sale March 26th in the US. If you already have ‘Teenage Dream’, you can just get the new songs by the way – no need to buy this thing twice! |
