2.18.13 - New Music - One Direction
One Direction have released a new single, only this time it isn’t from any CD…nor is it their own track.
Does the song ring a bell? Sound familiar? Feel like you know it from somewhere? That’s because you do. The track is a mashup of Blondie’s “One Way Or Another” and a song called “Teenage Kicks”, which was released all the way back in 1978 by a group called The Undertones. I normally wouldn’t be a fan of such a cover (ask me how I feel about Britney Spears’ “I Love Rock and Roll”), but the song isn’t a single meant to sell albums, but rather to raise money for charity. Comic Relief is the group that asked the boys to do this, and it seems they have quite the long history of charity-specific single releases in the UK. The nonprofit has released one single per year since 1986, and every single one (save for last year’s Susan Boyle track) has reached the top ten. In fact, twelve of them have become #1 hits (including songs by the Sugababes, Girls Aloud, and The Saturdays). One Direction’s turn is a fun track, and while I might not normally be so enthusiastic, there is really no reason to poo-poo it (who would do that to a fundraiser?). So, yayyy One Direction! |
