12.29.12 - New Music - The Saturdays and Sean Paul
British girl group The Saturdays are doing double duty these days. Not only are they making a “comeback” in the UK (they didn’t put out an album in 2012. That’s them “on hiatus”), but they are aiming their sights on the US market as well.
“What About Us” is the lead single from ‘The Chase’, their fifth album in the UK and also from their debut American EP ‘Chasing The Saturdays’. This is the better version. There is also a recording with Sean Paul (probably for the US market only) that isn’t as great because…well…because it has Sean Paul. To be fair, I actually think that several of the girl’s vocal style work with Paul’s island tone, but I’m just not really a fan of his. The song itself is rather bland. It has a nice enough beat, and the manipulation of their singing in the breakdown is kind of cool, but it’s nothing we haven’t heard many times before. The lyrics are typical, and the whole package is just…meh. But, thus is much of The Saturdays’ output. Some will really like it, and others won’t give two shits. I’m the latter, as will be much of America. |
