11.20.12 - New Music - Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding’s sophomore effort ‘Halcyon’ has only seen one real single so far, all of the other ones were…promotional singles? I guess? “Anything Could Happen” peaked at #4 on the UK charts, and it is slowly starting to happen in the US. I get terribly excited any time I hear it on the radio…which isn’t very often.

“High For This”, “Hanging On (ft. Tinie Tempah)”, “I Know You Care”, and “Explosions” were all released to help pump up the album, which did make a top ten debut in the US (her first), but it did miss the UK #1 spot (which her first album did achieve). Oh well. Ellie’s doing fine.

Second single “Figure 8” should be released sometime soon, and I expect it to take hold in her homeland. “Anything Could Happen” is going to simmer in this country for a long time before probably slowly falling, never getting anywhere close to the success of her debut smash “Lights”.

The song is typical Ellie, but for the music. Her dating Skrillex is most apparent on this track than on any other from ‘Halcyon’, as the music is dangerously close to dubstep. While much of her first album was light folktronica, I don’t actually see this as a far shot from what she was doing before. The tone of much of her music is somewhat dark and deep, and I think the hard electro/dubstep-esque sound fits with the song.

It isn’t my favorite Goulding song, but I still think she can do no wrong. “Figure 8” gets a thumbs up here.
