11.1.12 - New Music - Bruno Mars

I personally really liked Bruno Mars’ new single “Locked Out of Heaven”, but I can understand why it maybe isn’t a smash hit. The song is too old-sounding, and it certainly isn’t hip. Cool in its own right, but not…modern.

Lord knows Bruno ain’t a dance guy.

Well, the song did alright (it has thus far peaked at #7), considering how far from the trends of Top 40 it is, but does it have a shelf life?

Mars and company seem to think it might not, so it’s on to the next one. “Young Girls” is the second official single off ‘Unorthodox Jukebox’, his forthcoming sophomore album (due Dec. 11). Again, I can’t think of much else that could still be called “pop” and not be what you’d expect to hear on the radio. But then again, this is what Bruno is known for.

The song is pretty, and while I think kind of understated (the power is in his vocals), it is a Bruno Mars song, so it does have a certain elegance to it. Many songs called “Young Girls” wouldn’t be so respectful and…I don’t know…well done? Mars is clearly one of the better songwriters out there, no question about it.
