10.9.12 - New Music - Olly Murs and Flo Rida
While a new Olly Murs single is always welcome, this is some Maroon 5 shit.
I have always loved Olly’s style, and I am glad that he is (essentially) sticking to it. While this may be a bit off what we’re used to, it isn’t totally out of left field. I think we need someone in the music business doing what he does (if only in the UK), and it’s great to see he’s not totally giving up his sound. I will say that while I did dance to this, it isn’t my favorite. The song reminds me too much of Maroon 5’s “Misery” (you can totally hear it, right?). While the two were done by different producers (“Misery” being produced by Mutt Lange and “Troublemaker” being helmed by pop super producer Claude Kelley), they sound a bit too alike for me not to notice (and probably others). When I heard that Flo Rida was going to be on this record, I cringed. I assumed it would be terrible, but it..isn’t? I mean, it’s not great, but it is nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be. And, it opens Olly up to the US market (something he was about to shoot for anyways), so that’s always a good thing. “Troublemaker (ft. Flo Rida)” isn’t actually going to be released until mid-November (so why are you releasing it to radio and our ears now?). Sad. |
