10.31.12 - New Music - Mika

Mika’s latest album ‘The Origin of Love’ is turning out to be quite interesting…in terms of singles.

First, the world heard “Elle Me Dit”, the singer’s first try at French. The song obviously went to #1 in that country, but it didn’t do much else in the world (who wants to listen to a song in French). Next came “Make You Happy”, which turned out to only a be a buzz sort of thing. I hate when artists trick you like that. They release something ahead of an album, and just when all of us bloggers have written about it they turn around and say “Oh, no, sorry, that wasn’t a real single, I just wanted you all to write about it”. DAMN.

Anyways, “Celebrate” was third, and that was a real single. The song featured Pharell and it did alright around the world – all except the US and his home country of the UK.

Now, on to the next one. The album’s title track is set to be the third official single from the album, or in the US’ case, the first. Turns out all that work for the previous songs wasn’t for our benefit. He’s been saving himself (hehe) for this song for the US market, even going on Letterman to promote it.

The video came out in September, but the single isn’t “officially” released until November something or other. Why? How does that even make sense? His big TV appearance is done, and the video has been out for over two months, so any buzz that could have caused is gone. Why now?

The single is really fun though, so it makes me sad it will most likely do nothing. What starts of as perhaps a typical Mika song swirls and turns and builds until it is something much more. “Origin Of Love” is sweet and powerful, while at the same time maintaining that light-heartedness that has made Mika a fan favorite.

So what if it’s not a radio smash? I like it, and I hope you all do too.
