fun. try to go three for three with their new single “Carry On”.
After the massive worldwide success of “We Are Young (ft. Janelle Monae)” and “Some Nights”, “Carry On” is the track chosen to follow in the massive footsteps. Can it make it? Well, probably not, but that has nothing to do with the song itself. Bands like fun. just usually only have their minute and then fall back to the underground success that they’ve always enjoyed. Now, having said that, I don’t think anyone thought that “Some Nights” would do what is has, so it’s really anyones guess. In this day and age, radio programmers might be much more open to something that sounds so far out in left field as “Carry On”, it just might happen. And if they were going to have a third massive smash, “Carry On” is the track to do it. The song carries the power and the young angst of their previous two, this time swapping the Queen-like vocal harmonies of “Some Nights” for an accordion. Nate Ruess and gang seem to always throw something unusual and interesting into the mix that takes their anthems to a whole ‘nother level. And that’s just what this song is: an anthem. fun. have proven themselves a powerhouse when it comes to this genre, mixing indie rock, unique instrumentals, and Ruess’ undeniably quirky and downright brilliant songwriting to create songs that no one out there is doing. The band created a space for themselves in the mainstream, and only they can fill it. I personally would love to see this song make it, and I can’t wait to hear it on the radio for the first time. You know, once “Some Nights” finally leaves the Hot 100 top three. |
