10.16.13 - New Music - Katy Perry

After releasing one “official” single (“Roar”) and two “promotional singles” (“Dark Horse [ft. Juicy J]” and “Walking On Air”)--and yes, we are starting to get a bit confused as well--Perry has launched what is to be the second official single from the upcoming ‘Prism’.

“Unconditionally” is her rare grab at something other than a massive pop tune that is going to blast from car stereos for months to come. The somber track is closer to “Pearl” from ‘Teenage Dream’ than anything else, but it doesn’t match up.

While I can appreciate her trying something new (and she certainly is in a position to do so, after so many massive hits in a row), this doesn’t strike me the right way. I honestly think this is the single most poorly written song on the album, especially the way she attempts to stretch the word out to fit the music. “Unconditionally” ends up sounding like a word too large to fit in her mouth.
